The Inspiration:
Inspiration can be found in the most unlikely places. The Oliver Spencer AW16 collection found it in the form of Ginger Baker. Ginger Baker was the drummer and one of the founding members the band Cream. Having been known primarily for his role in music, Ginger Baker was a man of great sartorial pedigree. Baker often led the way for British counter-culture fashion. While America had Easy Rider & Woodstock we had the likes of Baker.
The Oliver Spencer AW16 collection is inspired in particular by Baker's trip to Africa. Ginger Baker's trip led him to work with the legendary
Fela Kuti (also a Number Six Favourite). Baker travelled the African continent with Kuti for an education in Afrobeat sounds. The journey came to an end with Baker featuring on Kuti's album Live! It is precisely this clash of cultures that captured Oliver Spencer's imagination for his autumn/winter 16 collection.
As a result garments from this collection hit the nail on the head with 70's vibes. Suede's & dark tones give a real feel of the rock & roll era. Considered cuts & tailoring give a tidier look and a nod to the Afrobeat that helped Baker's very own creative journey. Anyone familiar with the Afrobeat look will recognise tips to the styling of Tony Allen & Ebo Taylor.
