Living Up To Their Name
Since the dawn of the 20th Century, the Feinbloom brothers decided to do something a little different. Since this decision, Champion have cemented themselves at the forefront of American sportswear manufacturing. Following in the footsteps of great companies before them, these guys come from humble beginnings and organic business growth. Aside from the pared-down, classic, vibe we can always expect from them, the rest of their success is largely down to their innovation in textiles.
The now iconic 'Reverse Weave Sweatshirt' was developed in the late 1930's by a group of visionaries down at Champion HQ. Noticing issues with frequent wear during sports: the garments were shrinking. So, they decided to combat this. The idea actually came from the American coaches during the late 30s and 40s who needed to wash their team's uniforms all together and risk-free. It's because of this that the fleece is turned upright when it's made, this gives it the name 'Reverse Weave'. In turn, this has created a more durable and long lasting garment, which we're all thankful for.

Originally producing kit for the University of Michigan, Champion later went on to supply garments for the NBA & NFL, 1992 Olympic Basketball teams and even the U.S. Military Academy. As well as dominating the growing sportswear market in the 80's and 90's, we reckon fair to say Champion were absolute, unquestioned pioneers in the early days of technical sportswear.
Like so many others, it didn't take long for the fashion market to take notice of the quality (and the 'C' logo) and adopt it into their wardrobes. Just like we chose to at Number Six.
Towards the end of the century, popular culture had Champion firmly in its grasps and undoubtedly aided the brand in becoming as global as it is today. Now firmly recognised as an industry staple, Champion has done what so many other labels have failed: transitioning from respected American sportswear to a household name. Presenting an impressive roster of past collabs with the likes of BEAMS, Wood Wood, Stussy, Undefeated & Supreme, they've only added fuel to the fire. This of course further enhanced what Champion are now widely known as: icons.

So where does that bring us into it? For SS17 we've got a wide selection of all the latest and greatest pieces. From classics like traditional Reverse Weave products, right alongside some more vibrant and seasonal garment dyed pieces. No matter which side of Champion you prefer, they're all going to be sharing a common ground in premium quality. Or you're wanting something more noticeable, there's bound to be something from these boys you can find yourself getting on board with.
Before we go: keep your eyes out for the Champion X Todd Snyder range. This collaboration is keeping it closer to their roots with more classic sportswear, and it's slowly finding its way to our rails at Number Six.
It's clear to see why - Champion are Champion.
